Dave King, lead vocalist of Flogging Molly

It was a dark and rainy night in Kansas City, but that didn’t stop fans of Flogging Molly from crowding into the VooDoo Lounge at Harrah’s Casino in Kansas City. The smell of beer was everywhere inside and people were just genuinely having a good time all around. Several men even wore kilts to the show.

After the crowd was warmed up by Matt Heckler, a vocalist and violinist, and the band Lucero, Flogging Molly took to the stage with huge smiles across their faces. The stage was fairly dark when the band broke into their first song, with only a flashing set of lights illuminating the band. That all changed quickly when the light show began.

Lead vocalist, Dave King’s Irish accent-laden vocals combined with the rest of the band’s energy kept the VooDoo Lounge guests on their feet all night. Perhaps the most energetic member of the band was the accordion player, Matt Hensley. Hensley seemed to be in his own world just going hard at it on that accordion. The way all band members meshed together to perform was quite impressive. There are several moving parts in Flogging Molly songs, like vocals, guitars, violin, flute, banjo, drums, accordion, and the way each person did their part, while having fun at the same time was awesome.

If you’ve never been to a Flogging Molly show, I’d highly recommend attending one. In today’s age of rock music, their Irish themed music stands apart from the rest.
